Around the world, Australia is recognised for a degree of sporting prowess disproportionate to the size its population, while the Australian people are associated with a love of ‘the great outdoors’. In addition, Australia’s climate and diversity of landscapes has been its major drawcard for tourists. In recent times, however, domestic media reports have highlighted what issometimes referred to as ‘the myth of the great outdoors’.
In this context, the work of Matthew Goddard-Jones is timely. As a photographer, he has set out to visually document the pastimes of Western Australians early in the 21st Century, and has captured an extraordinary range of interests. It provides a reminder that—whatever the statistics—people still seek social connection and outlets for physical energy beyond their homes, backyards and patios.
